The answer to this question may surprise you, since it involves relearning how to do things you already  do every waking moment of your life. Breathing. Standing. Sitting. Walking. These are actions that are fundamental to our everyday lives, but which we never think about. Mastering the correct way to do these seemingly simple things can help you achieve a healthier, happier life.

With compassion and great understanding of each individual’s needs, Susana instructs the student in their first steps to conscious movement (knowing your body better) with the application of Qigong (Chee-Gong).  Qigong is the ancient Chinese self-healing art that provides us with the most effective tools for self-healing by taking responsibility for our own health through movement and deep conscious breathing.  Susana offers the basic tools to develop strength, flexibility, softness and sensuality in your daily life.  Correct body alignment is essential for a healthy lifestyle.  These tools are a mixture of various methods from Susana’s Contemporary and Classic Dance, Yoga, and QiGong.  Susana’s Latin roots bring a unique twist to her classes, with her integration of Afro-Latin work in the process, and making it simple, musical, and with dance phrases that are fun to learn and apply with a good sense of rhythm, confidence and spatial awareness.  You will learn how to stretch your body correctly, how to stand straight, walk, and sit down properly–in short, how to relate to your body in a much more healthy and conscious manner.

AFRO Latin and Caribbean Dance Styles Class

 

Enjoy Susana Weingarten’s Latin dance styles classes, which are fun classes she teaches with great energy, while giving personal attention to each student. A Latina world-class and award-winning teacher, dancer, choreographer, and former co-director of the Dance/Theater Company DANCEVERT, Susana provides her students a basic understanding of the main Latin rhythms such as salsa, merengue, samba and more, using authentic Latin music that transports students to the Latin-American world.  This workshop provides the student with an understanding of the various styles of music of the great Latin-American and Caribbean cultures. No partners required.

AFRO LATIN RYTHMS

Like many arts and sciences that are profound, beautiful, and powerful, yoga has suffered from the spiritual poverty of the modern world--it has been trivialized, watered down, or reduced to cliches. The deep and eternal essence of yoga has been misrepresented and packaged for personal profit by clever people. At the hands of some, yoga has been reduced to the status of just another exercise program available on videotape. In other contexts, yoga has been presented as a cult religion, aimed at attracting "devotees." Such a haze of confusion has been created around the clear and pure concept of yoga that it is now necessary to redefine yoga and clarify its meaning and purpose.

The meaning of the word "Yoga" is "union". It is derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj," (pron. "yug") meaning "to join". 

In this class I introduce you to the fundamental principles of alignment and breath which are basic to centering our body/mind/self  ( energy or spirit ). There is absolutely no way to understand this whole concept of union without starting at the root of Feeling these basic fundamentals. I reality, not many people take their time to learn or teach these fundamentals. In the process of bypassing these fundamentals, we provoke injuries, and learn  improper ways to exercise that need to be unlearned. 

 

To experience the balancing act of centering our body/mind/self, is what I have learned to teach throughout my life as a discipline dancer. How to correctly breath, and how to implement this to every movement is the base of this class. If you already do Yoga, the class will strengthen your practice, if you are a beginner and have no experience with any movement or stretching class, this will give you the tools to continue practicing on your own, and/or taking more advanced classes.

QiGong (or ch’i kung) refers to a wide variety of traditional practices that involve methods of accumulating, circulating, and working with qi, breathing or energy within the body. QiGong is practiced for health maintenance purposes, and other purposes.

 

The “Qi” in QiGong means air in Chinese, and, by extension, life force, dynamic energy or even cosmic breath. “Gong” means work applied to a discipline or the resultant level of skill, so QiGong is thus breathing or energy work. QiGong work involves breathing and movement exercises, with possible benefits to health through stress reduction and exercise.

Susana brings to this class a variety of Wuji QiGong (a type of QiGong) with ease, fun and great energy, to engage students in a wide range of modes of movements and deep breathing practices.  The result is to facilitate and make this practice readily applicable to the activities of daily life.  Students learn to know their bodies.  There are several forms of self-massage that are very helpful to all ages and people of all levels of understanding.  In essence, QiGong helps one to move more easily and to be aware of the body and how proper breathing is fundamentally essential in all of our activities, including the management of stress in our busy lives.
